Center for Sacred Psychology

VERO BEACH, FL, NOVEMBER 30– Tai Chi is an ancient form of meditation and non-martial art with health and spiritual benefits that is growing in popularity in America. Master T’ai Chi instructor John P. Milton will be bringing to Sebastian and Vero Beach his wisdom and the form of T’ai Chi developed by a Taoist monk, who originated what is widely practiced today. Called T'ai Chi for Enlightenment, this form has been practiced by the monks and mountain sages in China for 800 years. Only recently has the teaching been available in the West. John Milton will give a free, informal talk at the offices of local oncologist Dr. Hema Rao, 981 37th Place (across from the Indian River Memorial Hospital,) on Wednesday, December 10th, from 7:30 to 9:00 P.M. He will also offer a weekend workshop, entitled “T’ai Chi for Enlightenment” at Kashi, 11155 Roseland Road in Sebastian, December l3-l4.

John was invited to the Wudang Monastery in 2005, honored for his commitment to classical T’ai Chi, and sought as a consultant by the Taoist priests. Easy to learn and practice, the Enlightenment form can be learned completely during the workshop. The practice is energizing and uplifting, bringing the “chi” (energy) of heaven and earth into union in the body. Feelings arise of expanded energy, deep relaxation, opening of the heart, inner serenity, and spiritual awareness.

“This is a rare visit to our area with a genuine T’ai Chi Master,” said Dr. Douglas Canterbury-Counts. “All participants are in for a real treat. John has devoted many years of study, deep training and spiritual cultivation in some of the world's most profoundly enlightening, earth-connected traditions. What he will be teaching is a culmination of many years of solo immersion and spiritual practice in the wilderness. Join us for an unforgettable weekend at Kashi.”

Mr. Milton graduated from the University of Michigan with Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Ecology and Environmental Conservation. Since the 1950's, Mr. Milton has conducted numerous expeditions and field projects in wilderness areas. These have included rhino and tiger conservation in Nepal, protection of the mountains ecosystems of Nepal and Bhutan, preservation of Alaska's wilderness, and rain forest and wild lands protection in Mexico, Central America, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Cambodia, Laos, and East Africa. Between 1963 and 1972 Mr. Milton directed the International Programs Division of the Conservation Foundation/World Wildlife foundation. He played an instrumental role in the birth of the environmental movement, serving on President Johnson’s council that developed the Environmental Protection Act. Since 1972, Mr. Milton has served as president of Threshold, a public foundation involved in a wide variety of domestic and international environmental projects, also serving on the U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisers as the first ecologist to do so in the early 1970’s, serving as Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Illinois and past Director of their Center for Urban and Regional Studies. Mr. Milton has written nearly one hundred books and articles on ecology, environmental conservation and inner development.

The cost of the workshop is on a sliding scale from $81 to $306. It will be held Saturday, December l8 from 9 – 4 pm and Sunday, December l4 from 9-3 pm. For more information, please contact Dr. Doug Canterbury-Counts at sacredpsyc@aol.com or 772 569-2239.

November 18th, 2007: Voice Celebration Workshop with Deva Premal & Miten

Sunday, November l8th ll:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Deva Premal is living a musician’s dream career. Barely a blip on the mainstream music industry's radar, she has sold over half a million albums and performed for hundreds of thousands of fans (or friends, as Deva would say), a loyal community that grows with each tour.

As one ardent admirer says, "when Deva Premal sings, the gods listen.” Deva and Miten consider their music to be “a gift, an offering…we don’t care if we play for one person or one million people." This approach has resulted in increasing legions of devoted listeners (numbering much closer to the one million mark), including such notables as His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tony Robbins, Edward James Olmos and Cher, as well as yoga communities, spas, and healing and meditation practitioners worldwide. Deva Premal and Miten will tour North America this fall performing in 25 cities and three countries. Kashi is delighted to announce its workshop with Deva and Miten on Sunday November l8 from ll:00 – 5:00 p.m.

The German-born singer's first and still most-beloved album, The Essence, was recorded in 1998 as a teaching tool for workshops on mantra (translated from Sanskrit as “to free the mind”). Her new release, Deva Premal Sings the Moola Mantra from White Swan Records honors all spiritual paths, creeds and traditions. Deva’s extraordinary voice -- a silky, unmistakable, sustained vibrato -- moves the mantra through a serene soundscape of sitar, bansuri, dotar, strings, piano, tabla and ambient electronica, in a suite of treatments of the single mantra.

The workshop at Kashi will consist of two parts: Satsang: Meditation with Music and Chanting from 11am-12:30 pm , and Voice Celebration from 2-5pm.

"When was the last time you really opened your voice in joy and sang from your heart?” Deva Premal asks. “This workshop is for people who have a longing in their hearts to sing "YES" to life, a longing to sing "THANK YOU!" to life, a longing to open the door to their own inner being, to their own inner peace,” she adds.

For those who have never sung in a group before, this is a safe and nurturing environment to connect with the voice without judgment or inhibition. The cost of the workshop is $108. People may register online at www.kashi.org, or call Kashi at (772) 589-1403, ext 112.

Kashi School of Yoga is located at 11155 Roseland Road in Sebastian.
