COMPASSION II
To lead a compassionate life, greet each day with
the understanding that this day your need to embrace another human being
is greater than the other’s need to be embraced. If you are on
a spiritual path, you can’t create the whole of your life unless
you look inside yourself to see if you really feel for other human beings.
Do you really care enough about your soul and your own heart to extend
yourself?
So you begin to practice. You stand in front of the mirror of life
and you ask, “How would I want to be treated?” The second
question you would ask is, “How would I want it done? How would
I want to receive compassion?” You will always come to the answer,
“With a full heart.” When someone is lonely, bring him or
her friendship. When people are hungry, bring them food. When people
are cold, bring them clothing.
But the best part of this is that the compassionate heart that lives
its life in a God-filled way knows exactly what to do. Many times it
is because they’ve been there and didn’t have it done for
them. Many people say: “If you were abused, you abuse. If you
were hungry, you make sure others starve.” This is not true at
all! Compassion is part of your liberation. Do not use the excuse that
you are asleep and that you are ignorant, because we all know how we
want to be treated. Compassionate people will always know that they
are being taken care of, one way or another.
Compassion shines down like the sun, touches you like the caress of
a breeze, leads you like God’s own voice, and caresses you like
the Mother’s touch. Now what do you do about it? You may choose
to be in a hurry and ignore the rhythm of compassion, or you can breathe
ever so deeply and ask your God to show you the path. Once you find
the first step, you ask from the depth of your soul to be able to lead
a compassionate life, however old or however young you are, for it is
your way to freedom and liberation.
