TEACHINGS OF MA JAYA

Ma Jaya teaches from a depth of wisdom and practicality which allows us to return again and again to turn over the words, and bring them into our moment. We would like to share some of Ma Jaya's teachings on a variety of subjects. These teachings have been taken from several sources - the Kali Natha Yoga Teacher Training Manual; Ma's daily pujas and prayers; and transcripts of Ma's darshans.

Give the gift of Ma's words with the 2010 Daily Inspirational Calendar of Ma's quotes.

Ma Jaya teaches on the following topics:

AIDS AND KARMIC SPACES: People can understand being jealous of one’s own self, yet what about those who cannot get the AIDS drugs and are jealous of those who can? People who can’t get these drugs, or any kind of help whatsoever, are not jealous of those who can! It is the last thing on their mind, jealousy ... more

ALLOW UNWORTHINESS TO MELT: The inner self is masked by self-doubt and unworthiness. When you doubt your own self-worth, it causes you to doubt your life. Sometimes unworthiness takes us away from trusting others. You have nothing to give away to the world if you do not feel love for the creation of your life...more

ANGER ROBS YOU OF THE BREATH: Every morning is a brand new day and a brand new life; in fact, as you embrace the moment, every moment becomes a brand new life! Your whole life can change in a split second if you allow it. You can turn your whole way of thinking around this very second in time and space ... more

ASKING FOR HUMILITY: Looking at the spectrum of life, understanding the Karmic Spaces brings about the vitality of wisdom that brings about the vitality of humility. When humility runs through all eleven Karmic Spaces, it shrinks the ego. The sharpest of all weapons to defeat the ego is the sword of humility... more

ATTACHMENT AND FEAR: Attachments to worldly desires are like an ocean filled with dark waves: they come over you when you least expect them, and keep you from feeling love. The dark waves are composed of anger, greed, and all kinds of fear. Yesterday’s attachments stick to today’s fear. Fear increases and becomes greater... more

ATTACHMENT STEALS LOVE: Are you stagnating? Are you bored? Are you alone and afraid? Are you afraid of being alone? Are you afraid of being alone with God? If your answer is “yes” to any of the above, then you have become very attached in your life. There is no pain greater than attachment. Attachment steals love away from one’s heart ... more

BECOME THE KEEPER OF KINDNESS: To live a life of kindness is to be in the ultimate flow of the cycle of birth, death, rebirth, and so on. This is not a safe and comfortable life; it is a life that is filled with longings, even as you fulfill them. If you stay very still for just a few minutes a day, the longing will grow and you will become the keeper of kindness and the giver of love...more

CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT THE EGO?: There is a higher mind and a lower mind, a higher ego and a lower ego. Never is there just one lower ego in a person, but there is only one higher ego. Can you live without ego? No. Does it get transferred into a higher space? Absolutely! ... more

CELIBACY (Brahmacharya): A celibate person lives life with one lover, and that lover is everything. Very few travel the path of celibacy – not because it’s hard, but because it’s real. The intimacy that is provided by the path of celibacy is not for everyone, not even for everyone who chooses the path of celibacy... more

CONSUMING STRESS: Living in stress with an unconscious inability to consume it stops you from being able to stay in the present moment. Stress can be stopped in the moment, if that moment is one of non-reaction. This is called the great hesitation. In that split second of hesitation and experiencing the moment, you will find a timeless space where stress can be conquered instead of leading to the roots of tension... more

CONTENTMENT (SANTOSH): Ask the Mother to liberate you from wanting that which will hurt your spiritual progress. Be aware of your own beauty this moment. Ask the Mother to make you aware of your own purity... more

CULTIVATING COMPASSION: To lead a compassionate life, greet each day with the understanding that this day your need to embrace another human being is greater than the other’s need to be embraced. If you are on a spiritual path, you can’t create the whole of your life unless you look inside yourself to see if you really feel for other human beings...more

CULTIVATING SUBTLE DISCRIMINATION: Discrimination is the ability to realize the world’s duality and illusion while seeing the deeper oneness of unchanging truth. Discrimination is the essence in the eye born from awareness. When you begin to be aware from watching and feeling your breath, there is a certain sense of knowing...more

DEATH IS AN INTERRUPTION: All the chaos of life will be organized in the fullness of death. Death is a slight interruption of life, and the light of God and Goddess will lead you on in comfort, without pain, until all the light fills your spiritual self. The spirit-body lives an ongoing process that will become a joyous emptiness. The vibration of life is always there in death...more

DETACHMENT IS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: Detachment – how does one get it? You must want it – you must want the clear spring water of non-possession, of being able to be in the heart without saying I, me, mine – whether it’s your children, friend, husband, or wife; it does not matter... more

DISSOLVING INDIFFERENCE: Spirituality is not just a mere philosophy; it is a way of life that breaks the silence of indifference. I must say of all the Karmic Spaces to find one’s self in that would be the most distressing, it would be the Karmic Space of Indifference, for it hurts one’s life so much... more

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF ILLUSIONThe ego gives birth to the illusion of the self. As you lose your ability to reason due to the ego, the whole body is in a space of agitation. This takes you from the path and brings you into the mind instead of the heart. Your whole being turns to selfish desires that you do not truly want... more

DUALITY AND NON-DUALITY: Let us all undertake the quest for our true self, that Being who can leave duality behind. It is only duality that keeps pain alive and thriving, and this is the way of the lower ego. When you begin to label yourself as worldly or spiritual, there becomes a division in you; this causes duality. Due to this duality, it is difficult to go further in your spirituality. Any essence that consists of more than one is duality... more

ENLIGHTENMENT: Enlightenment is a natural process. There is no easy guide to enter into enlightenment. You can learn, yet you cannot be taught. Enlightenment is yours; you just have to understand that you deserve it.... more

FINDING NON-ATTACHMENT TO WORLDLY DESIRES: In the scriptures, it is said that happiness is not found in objects; it is within one’s own being. Sometimes an individual rejects inner happiness in favor of worldly desires. When you continually think of your worldly desires, you place those thoughts on the object - and your heart cannot breathe... more

FINDING THE GOOD IN THE MANY: If you judge others, there is no time to fight injustice in the world. You have to let others believe whatever they believe without judgment or so-called righteousness. Judgment of anyone is a great source of pain for those who do not want to live a life of duality. It is hard to break free of the accumulation of negative karma. You can make a conscious choice to see the good in people... more

FORESIGHT: Foresight is a gift you give yourself as you live your life on the path of spirituality. To develop foresight, one must meditate on the breath coming in and going out with a great awareness. That awareness stays with you when you are not meditating. All of a sudden you find yourself not so hasty in decisions...more

FORGIVENESS AND LETTING GO: There is a vast difference between forgiveness and giving in. Giving in is a meek form of life, but forgiveness is not being a fool. You just forgive and continue doing what you have to do. If you give in to a person to whom you don’t want to give in because the person is wrong, you will enhance his or her power. Because you don’t want to fight the fight, you will actually hurt him... more

FREEDOM FROM JUDGEMENT: Can you accept who you are? If you can accept who you are, then certainly you can accept others without judgment or boundaries. That little box that you put everybody in begins to melt away. Self-judging turns into convictions, convictions turn into beliefs, and all this fits into the desire to be right... more

GANESHA: Ganesh is the favorite of the gods and goddesses. He is the elephant headed god. He, who is the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, is loved beyond love. Ganesha is revered as the keeper of the Mother Earth and the protector of the Goddess in all her many forms. It was Ganesh who wrote down the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita with one of His tusks. That’s why one tusk is missing on statues... more

GETTING PAST FALSE HUMILITY: Where does false humility come in? It comes when you cannot get past shame, so you get angry and try to hide the anger by appeasing everyone. Anger can develop into abuse of power or false humility. Of course, you are going to try to hide your anger. The more you try to hide your anger, the more you feed your false humility... more

ILLUSION (MAYA): The Mother Maya sends an illusion that is very difficult to spot as one travels on this spiritual path. This is the mental illusion of the mind’s heart. The mind gives the impression that it is the heart feeling, when it is only the monkey mind. It allows you to think that the self has something to do with time and space. The self is beyond time and space.  This place is what your Ma talks about when She says “the space of grace.”  This spirit of the space of grace is determined by your devotional attitude... more

KALI NATHA YOGA: THE YOGA OF AWAKENING: Kali Natha Yoga is the yoga of the great Nathas, who were taught by Lord Shiva himself. Kali Natha Yoga is not ours; it is our Guru’s gift to all of us. Kali Natha Yoga is the awareness of nature and the gifts that are given to us by nature, the gods, and the goddesses. Kali Natha Yoga is the center of the complete lotus, which represents our body and the chakras. Everyone can do this sacred yoga. Mental yoga can be taught to all who cannot move... more

KARMA AND THE KARMIC SPACES: What is karma? Karma is to be separated from your beloved. Karma is the relationship to the mind. Karma is a word that suppresses the oneness. Karma is a very complicated path to explain. The force of karmic decisions is upon you in accordance to your actions...more

KARMIC SPACES AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: How does fear keep us from knowing and giving unconditional love?I have been teaching about these karmic spaces for many, many, many years.  They cover, each one covers, a person’s whole lifetime.  It’s not all negative and it’s not all positive.  It is what you learn from the moment and the moment becomes the moment of the heart... more

LETTING GO OF FEAR: Everyone is given the continual opportunity to grow closer to God. Yet it is when you get the closest that you are the most afraid. When you are filled with love and you want to change the situation because of fear, know that you are following an old moment. Memories of fear may come up as you walk toward the light; begin to understand this so you do not sabotage yourself. Keep on going, and learn to love yourself unconditionally every day... more

PAINTING WITH COLORS OF LOVE: Out of the dark silence, the Universe was born, bursting with color. You are all born an unfinished painting. The subtle colors of love, life and death are yours to paint with. Attend to the magnificent art of the Mother, and come into the great depths that you never before noticed. Watch a particular tree from the morning on. Pay attention how nature keeps painting the tree and yet never paints a stroke... more

PRACTICE KINDNESS: No one’s way is the right way, and yet every way of kindness is the right way, regardless of religion or no religion, path or no path. It does not matter whom you worship, as long as you are kind and caring to all people... more

PRIDE DOES NOT TAKE THE MIDDLE PATH: Pride is the space of being unable to admit that you are not always right. It is always pride, lifetime after lifetime, that gets you in trouble, because you do the same things over and over again. When pride has become your master, you never learn... more

SATSIFIED WITH THE MOMENT: This moment, be a person who is satisfied with the moment. How does this feel? There is no searching, no wondering about greener pastures, no wanting what you do not have, no begging for what you feel you truly must have; you can sit and be content with all you do have. This place is called a place of gratitude... more

SELF-DISCIPLINE (Tapas): The easiest way to love yourself is to be strong in your self-discipline, whether it is about meditation, exercise, drugs or alcohol. We all know what is good and fine for ourselves, yet we pretend to not know anything whatsoever. Gain strength to overcome all your faults by prayer, or simply by talking to your God... more

SERVING AS THE FASTEST WAY TO GOD: I was born into an impoverished Jewish family. At the age of five I found myself living part of my life underneath the boardwalk with the homeless people, drug addicts, prostitutes, and alcoholics. Four homeless African Americans gave this young child a part of their life and a part of their dreams. They shared their food and their life; they taught me the true meaning of sharing... more

SURRENDER TO THE SELF WITHIN: There are many moments in life that one goes beyond illusion and time. This is when one rises beyond the ego. When this occurs, there is a feeling of divine reality. Everyone has moments of going beyond the ego... more

THE COMPASSIONATE HEART: A person who does not feel compassion is a person who is not alive with the seasons, alive with the planting, or alive with the reaping of life’s wonders. To live life with an uncompassionate nature is not to live life fully at all, but to skim the Earth and not really feel the holy soil that we walk upon... more

THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE HEART: The human heart is often considered to be the center of love, feelings and the vulnerability of emotional pain coming from attachments. The spiritually awakened human heart is described with four corners, each containing a facet of wisdom for transcending that vulnerability, which is universal to human life... more

THE ELEVEN KARMIC SPACES: Did you ever wonder why you make the same mistakes repeatedly and wait for a different outcome?  Did you ever stop to think why you hurt yourself so much, even though you know that you are definitely being abusive to yourself?  Did you ever want to know that there is a moment when you can just stop, hesitate, and not enter into the darkest places that wrap you in despair?... more

THE KARMIC SPACE OF INDIFFERENCE: In the Karmic Space of Indifference you forget you are a human being with a God-space called heart. One of the things that keeps you out of indifference is awe. Indifference happens when we stop being in awe of our lives; it is when we stop caring about the lives of others... more

THE KARMIC SPACE OF JEALOUSY: Jealousy is the first Karmic Space you allow yourself to get stuck in, and this gives birth to the second one, which is anger. Jealousy brings on every other emotion known to the human thought process. Jealousy and anger can keep you in a constant state of agitation... more

THE KARMIC SPACE OF THE DESIRE TO BE RIGHT: Expect nothing and give everything.  The ego sends you expectations of how others should be.  It is truly none of your business how another acts; your business is how you react toward others. Start this moment being the one who can not be abused by words.  Give your friends and such the great love that is in the center of your being, and when you about to be seduced by the ego to strike out, purposely pay no attention to the thoughts your ego sends you... more

THE PATH OF THE HIGHEST SURRENDER There are three levels of surrender. The first is the honeymoon period, when you meet your Beloved teacher or find your path. The second is when the honeymoon is over and you are faced with reality. The third period is when you are totally surrendered to who you are...more

THE PERFECTION OF THE SOUL: What is the soul? What connection do our bodily movements, or even the heartbeat of our beings, have to do with the soul? The soul is the expression of all that ever was, all that is, and all that will be. To understand your own soul is to be quiet and very still... more

THE SOUL HAS NO GENDER: As Swami Nityananda stated in his original Chidakash Gita, “The soul has no gender.” These words remain in my heart. God does not make mistakes; if you were born gay, this is the way your beloved wants you to be. Enter the light just as you are... more

THE TWO TYPES OF EGO: There are two types of ego. The first is the lower ego, the small I; this ego thinks only of the self. This ego gets a hold on you and becomes attached and needy. This ego creates the negativity that stops us. This ego wants you to believe that you are the doer... more

THE WILL OF GOD’S LOVE: One of the earliest teachings I received from our Swami Nityananda was to look forward to challenges, to enter into any situation from the place of my heart with the knowledge that I was loved passionately by God the Mother and God the Father. This takes time and practice. This takes the willingness to participate in the Will Of God's Love... more

TOUCH THE INFINITE WITH AWARE BREATHING: There are so many ways to feel the power of God this moment simply by watching your breath. By following your breath, you can calm your mind and relax your body. You can go beyond the finite and touch the infinite if you watch the breath go in and out with deep concentration. When you are aware of the breath, the sun of the Gods shines through the in-breath, takes the darkness, and melts it in your heart. The out-breath then becomes filled with light... more

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: If you allow yourself to think from the heart, this is called heart-thinking. If you allow yourself to love from the heart, this is heart-loving. If you allow yourself to give from your heart, this is heart-giving; then you will understand unconditional love...more

WORSHIP: Worshiping is a private, individual moment that comes from passion. Do you know how passionate you are? You do not grow toward God as puppets; indeed, you are not that lucky. To be a puppet of God is the second best thing. The first is to be a fool of God... more

YOGA - LIVING FULLY IN THE MOMENT: We practice yoga to become more conscious. Yoga is not only physical; it is a spiritual practice and an ancient philosophy that embraces all paths. Yoga arose from India’s rich spiritual heritage; it is a spiritual practice, one that is authentic and juicy. Once you begin to practice with awareness, you become more aware of your own spirituality and vitality... more

YOU ARE ALREADY LIBERATED: When you think about liberation, most of you think of heaven instead of Earth. Liberation does not happen in the heavens at all; liberation happens here on Earth, to ordinary people who are not ordinary at all. This uniqueness is about those who have become one with God and yet are just like everyone else. God is in every moment.... more

YOUR TRUE SELF: Have you wandered away from your true self? You started your perfect journey at birth to the place of God within. At some point in your lifetime you may crave for this God. That is when you must look and see what is lacking in your life... more
