Mother Earth and the Sages
One time the Earth Mother asked of a group of sages, “Who will help me to head off the storms that may destroy the Earth?”
In those times there were the great Goddesses and Gods that protected the Earth from the so called ‘negative’ demons - in other words, the negative and the positive that live inside of all of us.
There were four sages who had enjoyed all the graces of the Mother Earth: her wondrous forest and mountains of nectar and beauty; the song of the wind rustling the clouds and the meditations that brought bliss to their hearts.
The Earth Mother asked each sage to take one corner of the Earth and protect it from the great storms of the demon race.
All four said, “Yes, Mother, I will protect the birds, leaves, winds, hills, trees, sky, and all the lands from East to West and South to North; I will not stop until Mother Earth is safe. We all will roam and roam and be no stranger to any part of Mother Earth.”
And everyone had the intention to do so.
The one sage who was thought to be the most powerful said, “I intend to take the North side of Earth and protect it with all my might.”
They all took a corner of Mother Earth to protect.
They all intended to go off to the war of the positive aspect of life fighting with the negative actions of the demons.
In the morning after their prayers, the sages of the East, West, and South left to keep their word and to live by their intentions.
The Sage of the North, as he was to be known, hesitated. “How cold it is in the North?” he thought, and said to himself that he would wait until the others conquered the demons first.
Then he would fly on the breezes of the warm Southern corner of the Earth and conquer the Northern demons.
And so he sat in prayer as the ego, or the lazy mind, taught him to do.
After all, he was praying - which in his mind was as important as anything else.
The other sages conquered their posts and all of the lands of the South, West, and East were made safe. Then a great roar came from the north accompanied with a great gusting wind that the Earth had never seen before.
All the demons had congregated in the place where no sages had watched over.
The great North Wind ran over Earth and destroyed all.
The sage who had great intention to protect the Northern corner of Mother Earth was startled out of meditations and prayer with a great gust of wind that landed him over Mother's icy ocean, for the North Wind brought only cold and ice to the sea.
All sorts of destruction lay before him.
All of Earth became one great land of ice.
He began to sob, understanding the part he had played in the destruction of the animals, land and people.
His tears were hot like fire, and he begged of all the Gods and Goddess to give him one more chance to live his intentions and to not procrastinate.
The Great Mother Goddess of the Universe took pity on him and awakened him from his dream. You see, it had not happened yet! The Northern sage rose up out of the sleep that he was lolled into by his lower mind, and gathering all his strength, ran toward the North.
His relief was so great that he was bright with gratitude.
He conquered the North, and from that day forth he was called the Great Northern Star, the Sage of the North.
When the other sages saw what had happened, they took their intended places and protected Mother Earth, making good their intentions. It is not a matter of just intending to do something wonderful, important, small or thoughtful.
It is the matter of having the strength to see all good intentions through, no matter how tedious or beautiful they are.
When many thoughts race through you and many intentions are stated at one time in your mind, then your mind becomes sleepy and begins to roam.
Taking one step at a time and finishing what you have started will be like the rainbow after a storm.
You will radiate from the inside out, and every intention will be like an adventure.
