The fire puja is celebrating the birthday of Lord Hanuman, the Hindu god of service. This puja will be held at the Hanuman Temple and the puja will be led by Swami Anjani.
Join us for the experience of a fire puja, or hawan, an ancient Hindu ceremony used for purification and cleansing. At Kashi we have fire pujas throughout the year, often as a celebration of a holy person’s birthday or to honor a particular god or goddess. The ceremonies are full of rich symbology, color and sound.
The fire pit, or dhuni, is beautifully decorated with colored sand for each puja. A pujari performs the puja, along with 3 or 4 assistants. During the ritual, the pujari offers a ladle of ghee, or clarified butter, and pours it on the fire, reciting one of the 108 names of the Mother. Everyone then throws in a handful of seeds into the fire as an offering, chanting Swaha, meaning “may it be so”.
